Yard Jobs

Hello, welcome back to my blog.  I hope you’re well and making the most of the summer. In this blog post I thought I would tell you a bit about our own horses and our little yard.

We have three horses Beck the Fresian, Suzie and Spirit both thoroughbreds. My daughter stables with us and has Storm, also a Friesian and our 4 year old granddaughter Lottie has a mini cob Queenie. Our lovely friend Karen has two gorgeous cobs Steven and Polo. The newest edition to our herd is owned by our friend Karina, she has a beautiful pure white cob foal and has named him Silver Phoenix.

Our horses are turned out day and night now and will be for the rest of the summer, giving them more time to chill out and be a herd, although each has different requirements regarding the amount of grass they need, they can still touch each other over the fences and are often spotted napping with their neighbour.

Of course just because they are turned out and there is no more mucking out of  stables to be done, it does mean there are still other chores to be carried out. Spraying the paddocks to rid them of horse harming weeds is a job in itself. We have installed electric fences throughout our paddocks with the help of our lovely friend Paul, the electricity is supplied through a large solar panel and it works really well, thus reducing the amount of time spent repairing fences.

Poo picking, yes I know it’s enough to fill the faint of heart with fear, especially when clearing our horses paddocks as they’re so nosey. I clear our paddocks using a noisy old quad and a trailer. Any other horse would run a mile when they see this noisy monstrosity trawling across the field, not ours though. Oh no, the very sound it makes seems to fill them with excitement. They can’t wait to come over and cause mischief, such as stripping off the seat, stealing the keys, taking the poo picker and rake out of the back just as I’m driving away and if I happen to take my jacket off and strap it on the rack at the back it’s often whizzed off and the thief takes off across the field triumphantly waving it like some sort of victory flag. They also use both quad and trailer as an itching post and love to get themselves wedged between the quad and the trailer refusing to move so I can’t drive away.  I imagine them plotting their strategy for the next poo picking session, who knows what mischief they have planned for me today.

Anyway, on with the fun as I set off to clear the paddocks.

Have a great day.
